Battle for Midway is a 1942 American propaganda film depicting the Battle of Midway .

On June 4, 1942, the Battle of Midway began , a carrier battle in which the US Navy was able to successfully repel the attack by the Japanese Navy on the Midway Islands .

Director John Ford was on board one of the US ships as head of the Field Photo Unit . His cameramen recorded the Japanese attack, the US Navy defenses, the search for survivors, and the effects of the battle.

In 1943 , the film was awarded an Oscar in the category Best Documentary, along with three other films.

Producer and director John Ford, who was wounded during filming, co-produced the film with the US Navy. 20th Century Fox took over the distribution .

The film's speakers were Hollywood actors Jane Darwell , Donald Crisp , Irving Pichel and Henry Fonda , who also appeared in the 1976 Jack Smight war film of the same name .
