Up the River is an American drama directed by John Ford from 1930. Up the River is the first film by Hollywood legend Spencer Tracy .

Steve Jordan, a gentle young man from a better family, is sentenced to prison for negligent homicide. In prison he met prisoners Saint Louis and Dannemora Dan. The two good-natured professional criminals take care of Steve. While in custody, Steve falls in love with Judy, who is in prison for women. When he has served his sentence and is paroled, he wants to wait for his lover. He returns to his hometown, but since no one from his family or friends knew about his prison sentence, he is blackmailed by Frosby who threatens to reveal his past. Louis and Dan break out of jail and help Steve fix his problems so that he can marry his girl. After that, the escapees return to jail for an important baseball game.
