The Karnataka barbel ( Barbodes carnaticus ), named after the Indian state of Karnataka , is a carp fish from India. It is called Carnatic Carp in English, Pallikendai காவேரிக் கென்டை in Tamil and Kaverimeen കാവേരികെണ്ട in Malayalam .

Barbodes carnaticus is characterized by an elongated and compact body. He has a relatively small head, bulbous lips, small barbels and large scales. A black band is often visible on the sidelines. The color varies depending on the type of water from gray-black, dark blue to golden brown. The base of the fins is usually colored orange-red. The Karnataka barbel is on average 60 centimeters long and weighs 1.5 kilograms. In the Whest Gats in India, specimens weighing over 12 kilograms and up to about 90 centimeters in length have been caught. The relationship between growth and age of the Karnataka barbel was recently examined in a scientific study.

The Karnataka barbel lives in tropical rivers in India . It occurs in the Cauvery and Krishna Rivers , among others .

Way of life

Barbodes carnaticus likes to hang out in rapids and deep pools behind fast-flowing sections of rivers and large streams. Adult specimens often seek shelter on large rocks, rubble, underwater and other underwater obstacles. They feed on leaves and seeds that fall into the water, as well as detritus . The spawning season takes place in the months of July to August, the juvenile fish develop from September to December.

Use

The Karnataka barbel is used as edible and sport fish by anglers.
