Pedro Armendáriz

Pedro Gregorio Armendáriz Hastings (born May 9, 1912 in Mexico City , † June 18, 1963 in Los Angeles , California ) was a Mexican actor .

Life

Armendáriz grew up as the son of a Mexican and an American in Churubusco , a suburb of Mexico City , in the turmoil of the Mexican Revolution . The family later moved to Laredo , Texas . When his parents died in 1921, his uncle took care of him. This enabled him to study economics and journalism at the Polytechnic Institute of San Luis Obispo in California . After successfully completing his studies in 1931, he returned to Mexico City and initially worked as a railway engineer, insurance salesman and tourist guide. There he was directed by the director in 1935Miguel Zacarías discovered when he was reciting the monologue from William Shakespeare's Hamlet in front of American tourists in a café . After that, Armendáriz began a brilliant career in the golden era of Mexican cinema. He played roles as a romantic hero in films by the renowned Mexican directors Julio Bracho and Emilio Fernández and formed a dream couple with Dolores del Río as a film partner.

He was also noticed in Hollywood . In 1947 and 1948 he played in three films directed by John Ford : The Fugitive (German title: Command of Conscience ), Fort Apache (German title: Until the Last Man ) and 3 Godfathers (German title: Traces in the Sand ), but was there limited to the role of the cliché Mexican.

In 1956 he got a role in The Conqueror ( The Conqueror ). The film was shot near the Nevada Test Site nuclear weapons test site in the city of St. George in the US state of Utah . Three years earlier, the atomic bomb Harry , later called "Dirty Harry", had been detonated on the Nevada Test Site . This had resulted in the worst radioactive fallout from a nuclear test on the American continent. A few tons of shining sand from the area were also used for decoration in the studio. In the next few years, 91 crew members fell ill with cancer, including the leading actors John Wayne and Susan Hayward , the director Dick Powell and also Pedro Armendáriz himself. When he heard of his terminal illness while filming From Love from Moscow in 1963, he stopped short after the end of the shoot with a shot in the heart his life ended.

His son Pedro Armendáriz was also an actor.
