The Conqueror (Original: The Conqueror , alternative title Die Barbarians ) is a 1954 film by Dick Powell , which was released in 1956. The production of the film is associated with later cancers of those involved, as the shooting took place in the part of the Snow Canyon of Utah , which was radioactively contaminated by an atomic bomb test . John Wayne (→ filmography ) played (in the opinion of many critics grotesquely miscast) the Mongol leader Genghis Khan . The film was produced by RKO .

action

The Mongol leader Temujin , also known as Genghis Khan , coat in the 12th century, a caravan of Merkits . He takes the daughter of the Tatar ruler Kumlek prisoner. Temujin tries by all means to take the stubborn prisoner Bortai to his wife. In the fight against the Tatars he allies himself with the Chinese ruler Wang Khan. However, things turned out differently, and the Tartars liberate Bortai and take Temujin prisoner. Temujin is said to be tortured to death; Bortai has now discovered her love for him and frees him.

criticism

John Wayne received the Golden Turkey Award for the greatest miscast of all time for his role as Genghis Khan .

“Sumptuous epic with a lot of effort in terms of people, animals and material and all sorts of historical inconsistencies from the 12th century. One of the unfortunate attempts by actor Dick Powell to direct. "

A few tons of contaminated sand from the area were used for decoration in the studio. The connection between radioactivity as a possible cause of Wayne's disease was revealed in 1979 by the tabloid magazine Star.

30 years later, 91 members of the 220-strong film team had cancer. In 1981, 46 of them had died, including the actors John Wayne († 1979), Agnes Moorehead († 1974) and Susan Hayward († 1975) and the director Dick Powell († 1963). John Hoyt died in 1991. The actor Pedro Armendáriz had already committed suicide in 1963 after he learned that he was terminally ill with cancer. Many of the extras involved also died of cancer.
