Leo Tover (born December 6, 1902 in New Haven , Connecticut , † December 30, 1964 in Los Angeles ) was an American cameraman .

Live and act

Tover came to film when he was just under 16 and began his career in 1918 as a clapper boy at Norma Talmadge Film Co. In 1922 he moved to the New York studios of the Famous Players and was allowed to photograph a film for the first time as chief cameraman in 1926 after a total of eight years as assistant and as a simple cameraman.

Since then Tover has worked for the leading Hollywood companies (from 1928: United Artists , MGM , Paramount , 20th Century Fox and most recently, 1963/64, for Universal ). He photographed productions of almost all genres and proved to be both a capable black and white and color film cameraman. Leo Tover was considered a technically skilled craftsman, but without developing too much enthusiasm for innovation or a special, artistic finesse.

His most important works included the films The Day on which the Earth Stood Still (1951) and The Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959). He began his film career in 1926 as a cameraman for the film Fascinating Youth . In 1942 he was for his work on The Golden Gate for the Oscar nominated. Eight years later, he received another nomination for trophy, this time for his contribution to The Heiress .

His only marriage to actress Mary Kornman in the 1930s ended in divorce.
