Augustinus Kilian (born November 1, 1856 in Eltville ; † October 30, 1930 in Limburg an der Lahn ) was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Limburg from 1913 until his death in 1930 .

Life

Kilian's father was a shoemaker, but died when his son was only two years old. After completing school and high school in Eltville and from 1871 to 1877 in Hadamar as well as a time as a medic in the military, Kilian studied theology and philosophy in Münster and Munich . As a student he became an active member of the Catholic student associations Germania-Münster and Ottonia-Munich, both in the KV . Kilian then attended the seminary in Freiburg (the Limburg seminary was because of the Kulturkampf in Prussia closed) and received on 29 June 1881 in Freising the sacrament of Holy Orders . After a year-long position as chaplain in Reichenhall, Kilian received his doctorate in canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome .

After activities as cathedral chaplain , religious teacher and cathedral chaplain , Kilian was appointed bishop of Limburg by Pope Pius X in 1913 as the successor to the late Dominikus Willi . The episcopal ordination donated to him on September 8, 1913 Archbishop Thomas Nörber ; Co- consecrators were Georg Heinrich Maria Kirstein , Bishop of Mainz , and Joseph Damian Schmitt , Bishop of Fulda .

Kilian's main concern was to strengthen the city pastoral care in Frankfurt am Main and Wiesbaden in an otherwise rural diocese. He strengthened the settlement of religious orders in his diocese and established the Philosophical-Theological University of Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main and the Limburg seminary as training centers for the next generation of priests.

His native town of Eltville on the Rhine made him an honorary citizen in 1921.

Augustinus Kilian died on October 30, 1930 from a long-term heart condition. His successor was Antonius Hilfrich .
