Georg Heinrich Maria Kirstein (born July 2, 1858 in Mainz , † April 15, 1921 there ) was Bishop of Mainz .

Life

Due to the closure of the Mainz seminary as part of the Kulturkampf , Kirstein entered the seminary in Eichstätt. After studying theology, Georg Heinrich Maria Kirstein received the sacrament of ordination on November 14, 1881 from Bishop Franz Leopold von Leonrod .

Because of the Kulturkampf legislation he was only able to do temporary work in the diocese of Mainz, first in Hessloch in the Rhine-Hesse region (1880–1881), then in the Worms cathedral parish and finally in Bürstadt (1881–1884). With the reorganization of the relationship between state and church initiated by the elevation of Bishop Paul Leopold Haffner to the Mainz bishop's chair, Kirstein was able to begin his service as chaplain in St. Ludwig (Darmstadt) in 1887 . He took up his first pastor's position in Gau-Algesheim , where his bishop's coat of arms carved in stone can still be seen on the stairs to the parish church of St. Cosmas and Damian. In 1902 he was appointed to the cathedral chapter in Mainz and soon became a clergyman ,Appointed Domkustos and Regens of the seminary.

When Bishop Heinrich Brück died unexpectedly on November 15, 1903 , the cathedral chapter elected him as his successor on November 30. He received his episcopal consecration on March 19, 1904, the then Archbishop of Freiburg , Thomas Nörber ; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Fulda Adalbert Endert and the Bishop of Limburg Dominikus Willi , OCist .

As Bishop of Mainz, Georg Heinrich Maria Kirstein was constitutionally a member of the first chamber of the state estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse from 1904 to 1918 .

Kirstein had been so seriously ill since 1919 that on March 7, 1921, Ludwig Maria Hugo , the reign of the Speyer seminary , was appointed coadjutor and on April 10, 1921, he was ordained bishop in Speyer. Bishop Kirstein died on April 15, 1921 and was buried in the south aisle of the cathedral.
