Joseph Vitus Burg (born August 27, 1768 in Offenburg , † May 22, 1833 in Mainz ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop of Mainz .

Life

Burg was born as the son of a merchant in Offenburg and was christened Joseph Anton Burg. In 1787 he entered the order of the Franciscan conventuals in Speyer and took the religious name Vitus. Ideas and ideals of a moderate Catholic Enlightenment already shaped him while studying philosophy and theology, which he completed at the University of Regensburg and Würzburg . On September 26, 1791, Burg was ordained a priest for the diocese of Strasbourg . In 1802 he began his service as a pastor in Herten , in 1807 he became dean of the Wiesental rural chapter . From 1809 to 1827 he was pastor in Kappel am Rhein near Lahr and a real clergyman . In 1810 he also took over the office of dean in what was then the Ettenheim regional chapter . In 1812 he gained at the University of Freiburg to promotion to the doctorate in theology .

In 1817 he went to Rome with Vicar General Heinrich von Wessenberg as an expert for the Baden government on church issues . Burg was involved in all negotiations that preceded the establishment of the Upper Rhine church province . As the leading man of the Frankfurt Conferences from 1818 to 1822, he contributed significantly to an agreement. As a specialist in state church law , he was involved in the drafting of the ordinances to safeguard the sovereign rights of protection and supervision over the Catholic Church. Here he showed great closeness to Rome and courtesy towards the papal position. In 1822 Burg was appointed papal sub-delegate for the furnishing of the Archdiocese of Freiburg and in 1824 he was appointed Ministerialrat and member of the Catholic Church Section at the Baden Ministry of the Interior.

From 1822 to 1828, Burg was an elected member of the Achern and Bühl constituency of the Second Chamber of the Baden Estates Assembly .

In 1827 he was appointed dean of the cathedral and on January 28, 1828, auxiliary bishop in Freiburg and titular bishop of Rhodiapolis . He received episcopal ordination on September 28, 1828 by Jakob Brand , Bishop of Limburg . On September 29, 1829, he was appointed bishop of Mainz and finally on January 12, 1830, he was introduced to the Holy See of Mainz . His term of office was only three years. It was overshadowed by violent controversies with the theologically conservative and ultramontane Mainz circle .

As Bishop of Mainz, Joseph Vitus Burg was constitutionally member of the first chamber of the estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse from 1830 to 1833 .

He died in 1833 and was buried in Mainz Cathedral .
