Wilhelm Burger (Auxiliary Bishop)

Wilhelm Burger (born April 6, 1880 in Stühlingen ; † March 15, 1952 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop in Freiburg im Breisgau .

Life

Wilhelm Burger, one of four children of a customs officer family from Tauberbischofsheim , studied Catholic theology at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg and at the St. Peter seminary after graduating from high school in Karlsruhe . On July 2, 1903, he was ordained a priest by Archbishop Thomas Nörber . He was initially vicar in Schwetzingen , and from 1904 in the Karlsruher Liebfrauenparrei. From 1906 he studied in Rome and was also a study chaplain at the Campo Santo Teutonico . In December 1908 he was appointed parish administrator of the parish in Bombach and from February 1909 in Elgersweier . In 1910 he became a priest and teacher at the teaching institute of the Augustinian choir women in Offenburg . In the following eight years of his teaching activity he received his doctorate in theology in Freiburg . In April 1918 he took over the St. Urbans parish in Freiburg-Herdern .

With a letter of appointment of August 30, 1924, he was appointed by Pope Pius XI. appointed titular bishop of Thebae in Thebaide and auxiliary bishop in Freiburg. On October 28, 1924 he received the episcopal ordination by Archbishop Karl Fritz ; Co- consecrators were Ludwig Maria Hugo , Bishop of Mainz , and Joannes Baptista Sproll , Bishop of Rottenburg . As auxiliary bishop, Burger took over the departments of schools and religious orders in the archbishopric ordinariate . With the episcopal ordination he was also called to the cathedral chapter .

From 1937 to 1943 he was provost of the cathedral . During the National Socialist rule , Auxiliary Bishop Wilhelm Burger emerged as a clear critic. He called National Socialism a "disease of the times", and in his sermons he turned "against the cult of violence, the idolatry of race and blood, and the suppression of human freedom and dignity". 1948, elected him Domkapitel to Capitular and Archbishop Wendelin Rauch entrusted him with the office of Vicar General for the Baden proportion of the Archdiocese . He held this position until the state of Baden-Württemberg was re- established in 1952.

Auxiliary Bishop Wilhelm Burger died on March 15, 1952 and was buried on March 20, 1952 in the Blumeneckkapelle in the ambulatory of the Freiburg Minster .
