Bernd Joachim Uhl (born November 23, 1946 in Karlsruhe ) is a Roman Catholic clergyman and auxiliary bishop emeritus in Freiburg .

Life

From 1966 Bernd Uhl studied philosophy and theology at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg , Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg . In 1974, he was with a thesis on the Christian socialism in Freiburg to Dr. theol. PhD . In the same year he was ordained a priest from Archbishop Hermann Schäufele . From 1974 to 1977 he worked as a chaplain in the parish of the Holy Spirit in Heidelberg. In 1977 he was appointed full professor in the Archbishop's Office in Freiburg and worked in the areas of Caritas and youth with a focus on kindergartens and social stations. In 1982 he became head of the local department for Caritas, from 1983 head of the newly formed public relations department with the areas of press, radio, television and politics. In 1987 he was appointed cathedral chapter .

Bernd Uhl was appointed titular bishop of Malliana and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Freiburg in 2001 by Pope John Paul II . On May 1, 2001 he received the episcopal ordination from Archbishop Oskar Saier . Co -consecrators were Bishop Kurt Koch of Basel and Auxiliary Bishop Paul Wehrle . Uhl's motto is Caritas Cum Fide (“love combined with faith”). Since 2001 he has been Episcopal Vicar for Caritas . In 2012 he was appointed provost of the cathedral .

In 1999 he became chairman of the Diocesan Caritas Association in Freiburg. He was a member of the diocesan property management board, the church tax representation in the Archdiocese of Freiburg and the board of directors of the priest pension fund and the advisory board of the parish fund. He was also a member of the commission for societal and social issues and the Caritas Commission of the German Bishops' Conference . As chairman of the ecology working group of the German Bishops' Conference, he has been intensively involved in the discussion on global warming .

Pope Francis accepted his early resignation on February 19, 2018. At the same time he resigned from the offices of Provost and Episcopal Vicar for Caritas.
