Michael Gerber (born January 15, 1970 in Oberkirch ) has been Bishop of Fulda since March 31, 2019 . Before that, he was auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Freiburg from 2013 to 2018 .

Life

After graduating from the Hans-Furler-Gymnasium in Oberkirch, Michael Gerber studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome from 1989 to 1995 .

After working in Bietigheim near Rastatt (1992-1993), in the parish Herz Jesu in Ettlingen and in the parish St. Georg in Völkersbach near Malsch (1995-1996) he was ordained deacon in 1996 . On May 11, 1997, he received the sacrament of ordination through Archbishop Oskar Saier . He was chaplain in Malsch near Ettlingen (1997–1999) and university chaplain for the Catholic university community Freiburg-Littenweiler (1999–2001). In 2002 he became sub-director at the Archbishop's Theological Convict and was involved in the study phase of the priestly candidates. In 2006 Gerber was appointed Subregens at the Archbishop's Seminary in Freiburg. In 2007 he was with a thesis on theological and anthropological foundations for the formation and training of spiritual vocations to Dr. theol. PhD (magna cum laude). From 2011 to 2014 he was Regens of the Archbishop's Seminary Collegium Borromaeum in Freiburg im Breisgau.

He has been involved in the Schoenstatt Movement since his youth and joined the Secular Institute Schoenstatt Institute for Diocesan Priests during his student days . From 2005 to 2013 he was a member of the general government of the international priestly community.

Auxiliary Bishop in Freiburg

On 12 June 2013 it appointed Pope Francis to the titular bishop of Migirpa and auxiliary bishop in Freiburg. The Archbishop of Freiburg, Robert Zollitsch , donated him his episcopal ordination on September 8 of the same year in the Freiburg Cathedral . Co-consecrators were the Auxiliary Bishops Freiburg Bernd Uhl and Rainer Klug . His motto is Tecum in foedere ("With you in league"). In the Diocese of Freiburg he was Episcopal Vicar for communities and persons of consecrated life , spiritual communities and movements as well as pastoral education and advice.

Michael Gerber is a member of the Commission for Spiritual Professions and Church Services and the Youth Commission of the German Bishops' Conference .

Bishop of Fulda

After the election by the Fulda Cathedral Chapter on December 13, 2018, Michael Gerber was appointed Bishop of Fulda by Pope Francis as successor to Heinz Josef Algermissen and was introduced to his office on March 31, 2019 with a festive service in the Fulda Cathedral .
