Hans-Josef Becker (born June 8, 1948 in Belecke ) is Archbishop of Paderborn and Metropolitan of the Central German Church Province .

Life

Hans-Josef Becker passed his Abitur in 1967 in Rüthen . He then completed a teaching degree , which he completed with the second state examination in 1972. He then studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Paderborn and Munich . On 11 June 1977 he received through the Paderborn Archbishop Johannes Joachim Degenhardt the priesthood . From 1979 to 1995 he worked as a pastor in Minden , Paderborn and Lippstadt. In the following four years, Hans-Josef Becker headed the central pastoral staff department in the Archbishop's General Vicariate in Paderborn.

On December 9, 1999, he was appointed titular bishop of Vina by Pope John Paul II and appointed auxiliary bishop in Paderborn. The episcopal ordination donated to him on January 23, 2000 Archbishop Johannes Joachim Cardinal Degenhardt; Co- consecrators were the then auxiliary bishop in Paderborn and later bishop of Fulda Heinz Josef Algermissen and the then auxiliary bishop in Paderborn and later Archbishop of Munich-Freising Reinhard Marx . As a representative of the German Bishops' Conference, he is a member of the Central Committee of German Catholics and there a member of the “Joint Conference”. He is also Magnus Cancellarius of the Paderborn Theological Faculty.

In 2005, Hans-Josef Becker was appointed Grand Officer of the Knightly Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem by Cardinal Grand Master Carlo Cardinal Furno and invested in the order on May 21, 2005 in Paderborn Cathedral by Bishop Anton Schlembach , Grand Prior of the German Lieutenancy . In 2016 he became prior of the order province of Rhineland-Westphalia of the papal lay order, succeeding Bishop Heinrich Mussinghoff from Aachen .

In July 2012 Archbishop Becker was appointed by the President of the Pontifical Unity Council, Kurt Cardinal Koch, as the new Co-President of the International Roman Catholic - Old Catholic Dialogue Commission (IRAD). In a speech, Pope Francis expressly emphasized that the work of this dialogue commission plays an important role in the understanding between the Catholic Church and the Utrecht Union of Old Catholic Churches .

The coat of arms quartered, shows in field 1 a gold cross on a red background, the coat of arms of the Archdiocese of Paderborn. Field 2 a golden cross in deer antlers on a blue background, the coat of arms of the Benedictine abbey Grafschaft , his place of birth Belecke was provost of the monastery until 1803. Field 3 a green peacock feather on a golden background, symbol for Saint Liborius , the diocese of Paderborn. Field 4 a red anchor cross on a silver / white background, an indication that the prince-bishops of Paderborn were counts of Pyrmont until 1802 .

On top of the escutcheon the pallium of the metropolitan , behind it the archbishop's double cross and the green bishop's hat ( galero ) with 20 tassels (fiocchi) in four rows, hanging down on the right and left. Below the sign is the tape with the motto.

His motto is: In verbo autem tuo ("On your word"), the words of Peter, to try again after unsuccessful fishing with Jesus' word, from the Gospel of Luke ( Lk 5.5  EU ).
