coat of arms
The coat of arms of Bishop Wolfgang Ipolt shows his natural as well as his spiritual origin. His natural and spiritual path is recorded in symbols through four fields in the coat of arms shield: The Mainz wheel is taken from the Erfurt city arms and originally represents a symbol of Christ; The two Greek letters Chi and Rho, the Christ monogram , can easily be recognized in the spokes of the wheel . Bishop Wolfgang was a priest of the diocese of Erfurt and so it reminds of his origin and the place of his priestly ordination.
The book pierced by the sword is the symbol of Boniface , the apostle of Germany. Bishop Wolfgang comes from Gotha in Thuringia and was baptized in the local Catholic parish church of St. Bonifatius. In this church he also received the sacrament of Confirmation and celebrated his first Holy Mass as a priest.
The Silesian lilies on a golden background recall the historical connection between the Diocese of Görlitz and the Archdiocese of Breslau .
The scallop stands for both the city of Görlitz and the cathedral of the diocese. The city of Görlitz lies on an old Way of St. James and the cathedral is dedicated to the Apostle St. James the Elder . The shell is a reminder that as Christians we are always pilgrims.
His motto is below the coat of arms and reads: "Spread the scent of the knowledge of Christ" (2 Cor 2:14)
