Franz-Josef Overbeck (born June 19, 1964 in Marl ) is a Roman Catholic theologian . He has been Bishop of Essen since 2009 and military bishop of the Bundeswehr since 2011 .

Franz-Josef Overbeck comes from a farming family in Marl-Drewer, proven since 1320, from the marriage of Annette and Hans-Josef Overbeck. He has a sister.

His father Hans-Josef was the owner of the old Overbeck distillery in Marl, founded in 1895 .

Life

After graduating from the Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium in Marl in 1983, Franz-Josef Overbeck first studied philosophy and Catholic theology for two semesters at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . In 1984 he moved to Rome to the Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum and completed his theology and philosophy studies with a licentiate at the Pontifical Gregorian University in 1990 . On October 10, 1989, in the Church of Sant'Ignazio di Loyola in Campo Marzio in Rome, he received the sacrament of ordination through Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger for the diocese of Münster .

From 1990 to 1994 Overbeck worked as a chaplain in Haltern . In 1994 he was appointed cathedral vicar and rector of the German student dormitory in Münster.   • In 2012, Overbeck said in a speech to the German delegation at the soldiers' pilgrimage in Lourdes: "Without religion and practicing religion there is no human existence."
