Positions

Among others, he represented or represents the following positions:

  • Overbeck attaches great importance to a spiritual life, which in his opinion requires a lot of discipline. He emphasizes the increasing importance of accompanying people through pastors.
  • In a statement published in March 2010, which Overbeck signed, the dioceses of Münster and Essen, the Rhenish and Westphalian Evangelical Churches criticized the appropriation of Christians by the extreme right-wing citizens' movement pro NRW . They made it clear that they do not consider a ban on minarets compatible with freedom of religion .
  • On April 11, 2010, Overbeck spoke to Anne Will on the subject of homosexuality as follows: “Then we also know, and that is part of the penitential nature of the Church, that there are sinners among these people as there are elsewhere. There is repentance for that. [ Praunheim : To be gay is not a sin.] That is a sin, we know very clearly and unequivocally that it is. [Praunheim: ... of course ...] That contradicts nature. Human nature is based on the coexistence of man and woman. ”At a public“ cathedral talk ”with the former Federal Minister of Health Andrea Fischer on June 9, 2010 in Essen's cathedral , Overbeck admitted that he should have spoken of homosexual behavior rather than sin not from the disposition itself. On September 2, 2010, Bishop Overbeck said at a meeting with the Essener Lesbian and Gay Forum (FELS) that it was not his intention to “discriminate against homosexual people in any way”. Elsewhere he said in the Süddeutsche Zeitung: “I said what the Catholic Church is convinced of: Homosexuality in practice is objectively sinful, even if homosexual people are to be treated with respect. [...] That's why I do not do my position sorry, but I expect no sympathy for me when I am criticized. "
In an article for the Herder correspondence pleaded Overbeck in January 2019 a new attitude of the Catholic Church against homosexuals in the sense of “Depathologization”, so that “prejudices of bygone times, which are still fatal to this day, can be overcome on the basis of in-depth knowledge about human sexuality”; every human being can “enter into extremely respectful and loving interpersonal relationships”. Bishop Overbeck emphasized that it was a mistake to restrict access to the priesthood to heterosexual men only, and it was "downright absurd" to claim that the problem of sexual abuse can be solved by excluding men with a homosexual tendency from the priesthood. In October 2019, he apologized for the stance he took on Anne Will's 2010 show and said that he assesses homosexuality differently today.
  • In August 2011, Overbeck spoke out against a quick withdrawal of the Bundeswehr from Afghanistan : “We cannot simply leave the country in a radical pacifist manner. We must not leave people to their own devices and a non-existent order. "
  • In 2012, Overbeck said in a speech to the German delegation at the soldiers' pilgrimage in Lourdes: "Without religion and practicing religion there is no human existence." The statements were criticized by the Giordano Bruno Foundation in an open letter to the Federal Minister of Defense because Overbeck indirectly denied humanity to non-religious people.
  • At the beginning of November 2015, Overbeck's statement on refugee policy, which he made in a discussion with the SPD chairman Sigmar Gabriel , caused "severe criticism". The bishop rejected the so-called transit zones for refugees at the borders of Germany , which were proposed primarily by politicians from the CDU and CSU, and said that refugees must feel “like in concentration camps” there. A few days later, Overbeck spoke of an "inappropriate comparison" and apologized.
  • In October 2019 he commented on the question of the admission of women to the ordination offices that, in his experience, the vast majority no longer understand the justification of the exclusion of women with the will of Jesus.
  • In December 2019, Overbeck advocated exemptions from celibacy for priests in the Roman Catholic Church.
  • In May 2020, Overbeck spoke out in favor of showing solidarity in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic . Regarding a letter from a group led by Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò , warning that the corona pandemic should be used to create a “world government that is beyond control” and the fight against the virus should serve as a "pretext to support unclear intentions of supranational units", Overbeck spoke of a "positioning of those populists and other conspiracy theorists who want to understand all efforts to contain the pandemic as a pretext to establish a hateful technocratic tyranny and to wipe out Christian civilization." This must be clearly contradicted on the part of the church - "regardless of who formulates such!"
