Anne Will is a talk show with a political focus under the motto “Think politically, ask personally” on public television ( Das Erste ). It is named after the presenter of the show Anne Will .

history

The talk show Anne Will took over the broadcasting slot on Das Erste from Sabine Christiansen . Günther Jauch , originally planned for Christiansen's successor, canceled after several months of negotiations because he was unable to meet ARD's demand for journalistic exclusivity. The directors of the state broadcasting corporations then agreed to make the broadcasting slot available to Anne Will. The first show with her was broadcast on September 16, 2007.

On August 31, 2011, Will changed her program to a slot on Wednesday evening, since Günther Jauch had now been won over for the political talk on Sunday evening. According to industry information, ARD paid him six million euros per year as part of a two-year contract that expired at the end of 2013.

On January 17, 2016, Anne Will took over the broadcast slot on Sunday evening again, as the contract with Jauch was not renewed. A permanent increase in the audience rate could not be achieved with him. At the end of September 2015, the NDR Broadcasting Council extended the contract with the production company Wills to the end of 2017. In September 2017, three more years were commissioned with 90 programs.

format

The structure of the program is based on the usual political talk show formats (such as Maybrit Illner or Sabine Christiansen ). In contrast to this, however, those affected sit down directly in front of the discussion group.

In contrast to Christiansen's program, Anne Will is not broadcast from Breitscheidplatz in Berlin but from Studio Berlin Adlershof . The show is produced by Will's own production company, Will Media GmbH .

Audience ratings

Anne Will has been the most watched talk show on German television since 2016 . While each program was seen by an average of 1.5 million viewers in 2015, it reached an average of 4.0 million viewers in 2016 after a channel change. In 2017 and 2018, an average of 4.1 and 3.4 million viewers were measured.

reception

The concept of the program and its moderator were criticized by the ARD program advisory board in 2008 because it has not been significantly changed compared to the program Sabine Christiansen . Anne Will does not succeed in "reacting flexibly to the course of the discussion". In addition, problems with factual security are criticized. The "timing of the broadcast" is bad, as it "often ends abruptly". With Anne Will , the contributions "often led to breaks in the discussion."

In a criticism of the first broadcast in the FAZ it was criticized that the moderation by Will was clumsy and that the mood of the broadcast did not differ from the doomsday scenario with Sabine Christiansen . Friedbert Pflüger , CDU politician and member of the Broadcasting Council of RBB Berlin, after a broadcast with Klaus Wowereit from ARD, called for the talk show to be canceled: “The Anne Will program is increasingly characterized by untruths and half-truths and deliberate distortions of facts. “After Will and Pflüger had agreed on a correction, Pflüger withdrew his claim.

Michael Hanfeld commented on a one-hour special broadcast by Anne Will on the refugee crisis in Germany from 2015 with Chancellor Angela Merkel as the only guest in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung: “A public broadcaster can be that close to politics […] incantations are varied for around an hour without ever specifically naming the problems that emerged openly and which the - we almost forgot - refugee crisis was actually about [...] The contradictions in which Angela Merkel got involved in the course of the therapy session with Anne Will, are special number. [...] The journalist asks all of this obediently and ticks it off neatly and with a friendly smile. "

Gender language

In May 2020, a Spiegel comment positively noted that the broadcast was clearly audible with a voiceless glottal beat when pronouncing personal names (“shareholders: inside”; see also gender colon ). Will tweeted that she had been gendered for a long time, but that it only seemed to attract attention, since "Doctors" has also been spoken in the film recordings (compare gender language in the media ). At the beginning of 2018, Will's mistake in gendering “members” caused a sensation, but this wrong expression can also currently be found in numerous documents and articles. An early use of word formation has already been proven for 2011, when even the German Association of Germanists used word formation. However, the feminine word ending -in is never appended to a plural form deviating from the singular, and no feminine form can be formed for a grammatically neutral personal designation such as "the member ".
