Markus Lanz is a talk show on ZDF that bears the name of its presenter Markus Lanz . The 75-minute show is broadcast Tuesday through Thursday late in the evening. As a rule, the program is recorded a few hours before it is broadcast in a TV studio in Hamburg-Altona , and there are sometimes also live broadcasts .

content

The respective program does not have a general topic. In each issue, Lanz has four to five guests, with whom he usually speaks individually. At the beginning of the program, he introduces the guests, who are sitting together in a group, with some information on the respective topic. Lanz writes the texts for introducing the guests himself. He then speaks to the guests one after the other. It is about current political and social developments, news from the entertainment industry (for example a new film or a new book), sporting events or the individual life story of the conversation partner.

If it emerges from the situation, the other guests participate in the individual conversation or discuss it. Especially with current stories, sometimes several guests are invited on the same topic, for example a politician and a journalist. Musical or sporty duos and relatives can also perform together.

If a musical guest is on the show, he often ends up playing a current song. He is accompanied by the moderator on the piano.

Guests

Most of the celebrity guests come from politics, the entertainment industry and sports. For current topics, experts such as journalists, scientists and doctors are invited to convey and analyze the facts in an understandable manner. In addition, celebrities are sometimes invited for no specific reason, who have not appeared in public for a long time and who remember their successful time. If the program runs after a soccer broadcast, guests from this area are usually guests.

Non-celebrity guests come on the show if they have an unusual life story (for example Holocaust survivors ), if they had a special experience such as an adventure trip or if they have invented or developed something.

Charisma

In the summer breaks of 2008 and 2009, Markus Lanz represented Johannes B. Kerner with his show . After Kerner left ZDF in October 2009, the program was broadcast regularly on Wednesdays and Thursdays. It has been running from Tuesday to Thursday since 2010. Most of the recorded programs are shown in the late evening. The start of the program fluctuates, depending on the design of the previous evening program, between 10.45 p.m. and midnight.

production

The program was initially produced by the Hamburg TV production company Fernsehmacher , in which Johannes B. Kerner and Markus Heidemanns each held half. Since January 2011, the program has been produced by the company Mhoch2 TV , in which Markus Lanz and Markus Heidemanns each hold 50 percent. The costs of the program, which are financed from license fees, are not published. The Süddeutsche Zeitung mentions an estimated annual salary of 250,000 euros for moderating the show Markus Lanz . Other sources assume that ZDF has an annual income of around 1.6 million euros.

As already introduced by his predecessor Johannes B. Kerner, Markus Lanz moderated the cooking show Lanz kocht! On Fridays on Fridays until 2012 .

Audience ratings

After the show started at around 11% market share in the first season, the ratings have risen since then and the show was above the ZDF channel average. There was particular interest from the audience after the Champions League broadcasts .

criticism

In January 2014, an online petition was sent to the ZDF, which demanded the dismissal of Lanz and received over 230,000 signatures within a few days. The petition responded to a conversation with the politician Sahra Wagenknecht , during which the moderator repeatedly interrupted her and asked her suggestive questions. Lanz then regretted his behavior, which he described as "rustic and even personal".

Lanz is generally criticized for talking too much himself instead of just leading the conversation, and for frequently interrupting his guests in their explanations. For example, one of the Focus TV columns said: “A talk show in which the presenter prefers to hear himself speak: only available at Lanz.” Barbara Sichtermann , on the other hand, praised him in the Tagesspiegel and highlighted three points: “The concept as it stands at the moment ”,“ Lanz's questioning technique ”and“ his ability to be a scout in the jungle, to conduct the symphony ”. Another incident that caused criticism occurred in connection with the death of Tanja Gräff . The student's mother was a guest at Markus Lanz. Before the recording, the moderator told her that he would ask a question about the letter that Ms. Gräff had written to the Rhineland-Palatinate Prime Minister Malu Dreyer . The issue was then not addressed after a call from the State Chancellery. Critics suspected a connection with Dreyer's function as chairwoman of the broadcasting commission of the federal states .
