Maybrit Illner ( spelling : maybrit illner ) is a political talk show on ZDF . The program, which was called Berlin Mitte until March 14, 2007 , has been broadcast on Thursdays since October 14, 1999 and moderated by Maybrit Illner . The show is produced by Gruppe 5 Filmproduktion .

The program is dedicated to current political issues. The guests of the show are mostly politicians who mostly come from federal politics . The program got the name Berlin Mitte mainly because it is produced in the Berlin capital studio Unter den Linden in Berlin-Mitte , which is supposed to convey proximity to federal politics.

Illner's talk show was also extended by a quarter of an hour to 60 minutes with the renaming.

Maybrit Illner has been broadcast from a new studio and with a revised design since March 31, 2011 . Around 20 freelance editors work for the ZDF editorial team, which is part of the main politics and current affairs department. Only the technical production of the program is outsourced to a production company.

According to industry information, Illner receives fees of a few hundred thousand euros per year as a moderator.

On February 2, 2017, Maybrit Illner had to sit out for the first time due to illness. On this day Matthias Fornoff took over the moderation of the show, also on June 21, 2018 because of a bereavement in her family. Illner was represented again by Bettina Schausten on November 30, 2017 .

Special formats

In the event of special political events, a maybrit illner special is broadcast, which can also occupy a different slot.

As part of the program Berlin Mitte on September 8, 2005, the "TV-Dreikampf" was broadcast. It is considered a TV duel between the small parties because the top candidates face each other from the opposition . Guests were Oskar Lafontaine (WASG), Joschka Fischer (Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen) and Guido Westerwelle (FDP). This format was also broadcast for the 2009 Bundestag election . The guests on September 10, 2009 were Gregor Gysi (Die Linke), Renate Künast (Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen) and Guido Westerwelle (FDP). Since 2013, ARD has been hosting the “TV three-way battle”.

In 2020, special editions under the title maybrit illner Corona special were increasingly broadcast. The program ran Sunday after heute journal , in direct competition with the ARD - talk show Anne Will and dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany .

In addition, illner will be shown intensively during the federal elections . Three politicians are guests every day in the 30-minute programs. In addition, there is always a commentary on the subject of cabaret artists at the beginning of the program .
