UGK (Underground Kingz) were an American rap duo from Port Arthur , Texas , that existed from 1987 to 2007 .
Career
Chad " Pimp C " Butler and Bernard " Bun B " Freeman formed the duo when they were 14 and 15 years old, respectively. After their founding, they achieved regional fame for the first time in 1988 with their tape The Southern Way and the song Pocket Full of Stones . In addition to the Geto Boys and Devin the Dude , UGK shaped the Dirty South genre and were the pioneers of Texan hip-hop, which has achieved international fame at least since her guest contribution to Jay-Z's hit Big Pimpin ' . UGK albums are now considered classics because they popularized rap from the southern United States and paved the way for countless southern rappers such as Rick Ross , Lil Wayne and Young Jeezy . Above all, the Houston scene around Mike Jones , Paul Wall , Slim Thug and Chamillionaire like to refer to UGK, which is accordingly often heard on their songs.
In the recent past, UGK tried to counteract the increasing banalization of southern hip-hop, which was triggered by technically simple party music ( crunk , snap! ) With little focus on sophisticated lyrics. Critics, mainly from Atlanta , accuse UGK of not allowing these often younger artists to succeed. Pimp C denied this and emphasized that he was proud of every rapper from the south, but they still had to start to stand by themselves, to be "trill" and, for example, to point out the negative sides of the otherwise glorified drug cycle, as UGK did their penultimate album did. With Underground Kingz they reached number 1 in the US charts for the first time . UGK was under contract with the Jive Records label . This album brought together hip-hop greats from the past and present, including TI , Talib Kweli , Three 6 Mafia , OutKast , Rick Ross , Big Daddy Kane , Slim Thug , Willie D and Scarface from the Geto Boys and Too $ hort .
At the 2008 Grammy Awards , they were nominated for their OutKast-recorded track International Player's Anthem . On March 31, 2009, Bun B released the duo's last album under the title UGK 4 Life . The song Da Game Been Good to Me from the album released via Jive Records was released as a single .
