Vol. 3… Life and Times of S. Carter ( English for: Life and Times of S. Carter ) is the fourth studio album by US rapper Jay-Z . It was released on December 13, 1999 on the labels Roc-A-Fella and Def Jam .

Production and samples

Many different music producers were involved in the production of the album . Jay-Z himself, Damon Dash and Kareem Burke served as executive producers . Timbaland contributed four or five beats to the album, while three productions were made by Swizz Beatz . DJ Clue and Rockwilder created the instrumentals for two songs each. In addition, were DJ Premier , Irv Gotti , K-Rob, Sam Sneed , P. Skam, Ken Ifill, Russell Howard, Sean Francis, Chauncey Mahan, Darrell Branch, Lance Rivera and Lil Rob involved in the production.

Nine or ten tracks on the album contain samples of songs by other artists. So in is Hova Song (Intro) a sample of the piece Burning the Midnight Lamp band Rotary Connection included, while so ghetto tracks Crop Dustin ' of Steve Cropper and Sporco Ma Distinto by Ennio Morricone is sampling. For the beat of Do It Again (Put Ya Hands Up) elements of the song Overnight Scenario by Rare Essence were used and S. Carter contains a sample of Heads High by the singer Mr. Vegas . More samples are in the songs Big Pimpin ' ( Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime by The Korgis , Khusara Khusara by Hossam Ramzy ), There's Been a Murder ( Murder by Alana Davis), Come and Get Me ( The Contract Man by Bullet), NYMP ( Life Can Be So Grand by Brian and Brenda Russell), Girls' Best Friend ( Keep It Comin 'Love by KC and the Sunshine Band ), and Jigga My Nigga ( Lil' Fire Friend by Isaac Hayes ).

Cover design

The album cover is in black and white . It shows Jay-Z, who stands between two blocks and supports his arms at the sides. He wears a chain with a cross around his neck. In the upper part of the picture is the black lettering Jay-Z .

Guest Posts

Other artists besides Jay-Z can be heard on eight songs on the album. The rapper Amil has three guest appearances, while the rapper Beanie Sigel is involved in two songs. One guest contribution each comes from the rappers Juvenile and Memphis Bleek as well as from the rap duo UGK . In addition, the singer Mariah Carey is represented on a track and the journalist Serena Altschul also has an appearance. The EU version of the album also features Is That Yo Bitch , on which Twista and Missy Elliott can be heard, while the US version features the song Watch Me , to which Dr. Dre contributed, is included.

Vol. 3… Life and Times of S. Carter entered the US charts at number 1 on January 15, 2000 and stayed in the top 200 for 47 weeks. The album also reached the charts in Switzerland and reached number 75, whereas in Germany it did not enter the Top 100.

The singles were the songs Jigga My Nigga (US # 28), Girls 'Best Friend (US # 52), Do It Again (Put Ya Hands Up) (US # 65), Anything (US # 55), Big Pimpin' ( US # 18) and Is That Your Chick (The Lost Verses) (US # 68). Big Pimpin ' was particularly successful, and in 2013 it received a platinum record for more than one million copies sold in the USA .

Sales figures and awards

Vol. 3… Life and Times of S. Carter sold 3.1 million copies in the United States, earning it triple platinum status. In the UK, the album won a Silver Record in 2013 for over 60,000 sales . Worldwide sales amount to around five million units.

At the 2001 Grammy Awards , Vol. 3… Life and Times of S. Carter was nominated for Best Rap Album , but was defeated by Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP .
