Rotary Connection
Rotary Connection was a psychedelic soul band that was formed in Chicago in 1966 and lasted until 1974.
history
The experimental band was an idea of Marshall Chess, the son of the Chess founder Leonard Chess . As the head of Cadet Concept Records, a label that should help young musicians to record, he wanted to release music outside of blues and rock and found the beginning psychedelic music movement . He hired Charles Stepney, a vibraphonist, arranger and producer, as well as members of the little-known band The Proper Strangers, Bobby Simms, Mitch Aliotta and Ken Venegas. Sidney Barnes, a songwriter from the Chess stable, Judy Hauff and Minnie Riperton were also hired. There were also prominent session musicians from Chess , including guitarist Phil Upchurch and drummer Morris Jennings. They recorded six albums before they broke up.
Their first album, Rotary Connection, was a modest success in the Midwest , but failed nationally, a fate that the Rotary Connection's other records also suffered. The band's fame was increased by a reissue of the albums in the late 1990s and the appropriation of the group's music through sampling in the hip-hop scene .
After the band split up, Charles Stepney continued to work as a producer, especially noting his collaboration with Earth, Wind and Fire . In 1976 he died of a heart attack. Minnie Riperton became a successful solo artist before she died of cancer in 1979. The other members either remained as less successful artists in the music business or separated from it completely.
