Phil Upchurch (born July 19, 1941 in Chicago ) is an American jazz guitarist and bass guitarist of rhythm and blues and rock jazz .

Live and act

Phil Upchurch started his music career in R&B bands like The Kool Gents, The Dells and The Spaniels . In 1961 he formed his own band with which he recorded the hit "You Can't Sit Down", which reached # 30 in the US charts. The band then consisted of the organist Cornell Muldrow , the saxophonist David "Bubba" Brooks , the trumpeter Mac Johnson and the drummer Joe Hoddrick . In 1966 he worked on Stan Getz ´ Homage to Burt Bacharach , What the World Needs Now . In the 1970s, Upchurch worked with keyboardist Tennyson Stephens ; their albumUpchurch / Tennyson was released on CTI Records in 1975, produced by Creed Taylor , the arrangements were by Bob James . In 1974 he worked on one of the last albums by Cannonball Adderley ( Pyramid ) before his death.

Upchurch was a sought-after session musician on albums by Bo Diddley , Muddy Waters , Jimmy Reed and Howlin 'Wolf . In the 1970s he worked mainly on various fusion albums, such as Grover Washington , George Benson ( Breezin ' , 1976) and The Crusaders . In the 1980s and 1990s, he worked with Joey DeFrancesco , Red Holloway , Chaka Khan , Booker T. Jones , Leroy Hutson , John Klemmer , Jack McDuff , Carmen McRae , John Pisano , David Sanborn , Jimmy Smith and Michael Jackson .

Upchurch received the Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation in 1997 .
