Joey DeFrancesco (born April 10, 1971 in Springfield , Pennsylvania ) is an American jazz organist .

Life

DeFrancesco is the son of pianist and organist Papa John DeFrancesco; his grandfather played for the Dorsey Brothers . He made his album debut at the age of 17 and played with Shirley Scott and Brother Jack McDuff (with whom he later recorded) as a teenager . A little later he toured with jazz greats like Miles Davis (tour 1987/8, recording Amandla 1989) and John McLaughlin . In 1989 he graduated from the Philadelphia High School of Creative and Performing Arts. In the same year his first album appeared as a leader. In the mid-1990s he worked a lot in a trio with John McLaughlin, later in a trio with Ximo Tebar .

He is considered to be one of the main people responsible for the Hammond B3 boom in the early 1990s. DeFrancesco can also be heard as a singer on some albums.

His work with Hammond organ legend Jimmy Smith ( Incredible , San Francisco Jazz Festival 1999) is also worth mentioning . At the end of 2019, his album In the Key of the Universe was nominated for the 2020 Grammy Awards .
