Van Morrison
Sir Van Morrison , OBE (born August 31, 1945 in Belfast ; actually George Ivan Morrison ) is a Northern Irish musician , singer and composer .
The beginnings
Van wanted to be a musician as a child. His father collected old jazz and blues records , which apparently influenced him early on. At the age of six, he went to record stores with his father and heard the music of Mahalia Jackson , Fats Domino , Muddy Waters , John Lee Hooker , Ray Charles and many others. He also often attended church services with his mother that played gospel music . At the age of twelve he was a member of the band Deannie Sands And The Javelins . At the beginning of the 1960s he played the saxophone and harmonica in the band The Monarchs and already completed tours in Germany and Scotland as a teenager .
The 1960s
In 1964, Van Morrison became the front man of the rock band Them , which had a number of hits including Gloria , Here Comes the Night and It's All Over Now, Baby Blue , the cover version of a Bob Dylan composition. After he left Them , the music producer Bert Berns from New York offered him a contract for a solo career. With studio musicians, Morrison recorded an album in 1967 that contained a hit with Brown Eyed Girl . When Berns suddenly died of a heart attack , Morrison was forced to change record labels. He later raised serious allegations against Berns and still complained 25 years later about the "sharks" in the music business. Up until the 2005 album Magic Time , this topic boiled up again and again in many of his songs.
Within just three days, Morrison recorded the stylistically unusual album Astral Weeks with jazz musicians in 1968 . The result was a fusion of folk , blues and jazz that had hardly been heard before . The album did not sell well, but is now considered by many to be his best album and is regularly referred to by critics as one of the best albums ever. It reached number 19 in the selection of the 500 best albums of all time by Rolling Stone , the British music magazine Mojo ranked it number 2 of the 100 best albums in 1995 and Uncut magazine ranked number 3 of the 200 best albums.
The following album Moondance contains the title song, one of Van Morrison's classics . Over three decades he has played this song in numerous concerts and has repeatedly rearranged it.
In 1967 he married the actress and ex-model Janet Planet (known as Janet Rigsbee, now Janet Morrison Minto), with whom he has a daughter who was born in 1970 and who later became a singer / songwriter. The marriage ended in divorce in 1973.
The 1970s
With Domino from the album His Band and the Street Choir, Van Morrison was able to book middle hit parade spots. He and his family had now settled in Woodstock , New York , allegedly to be close to Bob Dylan , who, however, kept his distance from Morrison. The rural atmosphere was reflected in the country- oriented album Tupelo Honey . On Hard Nose the Highway , Morrison used a rock group with string accompaniment for the first time, the Caledonia Soul Orchestra , which completed a successful tour of the USA and Europe in 1973. A concert from London's Rainbow Theater was broadcast simultaneously on television and radio for the first time in rock history; Parts of it can be found on the concert album It's Too Late to Stop Now . Only minimal interventions were made - and not touched up or changed in the studio, as is usual with many other artists. After a long stay in the USA, Van Morrison returned to Ireland, which made itself felt on the Veedon Fleece record . A Celtic- Irish mood dominates on it .
Feeling burned out, Van Morrison took a three-year hiatus, punctuated by a few appearances. In 1976 he took part in The Band's farewell concert at the Winterland Ballroom San Francisco with an appearance that was captured in the concert film The Last Waltz . There he came into contact with Dr. John alias Mac Rebennack and recorded with him the record A Period of Transition , which, however, met with little response. The next work, Wavelength , was also judged very ambiguously by the critics. The title Kingdom Hall on this album refers to his mother's membership of the Jehovah's Witnesses , whose meeting rooms are called " Kingdom Hall" . At the end of the decade, Into the Music appeared , again shaped by an Irish mood. The two songs Bright Side of the Road and Full Force Gale opened the phase of Christian spiritualism with their religious texts that would preoccupy Morrison for over a decade.
The 1980s
Morrison could not repeat the great success of Into the Music with the more experimental album Common One . The two albums were originally planned as a double album.
With Beautiful Vision, Morrison continued his early works and was widely praised by critics. The songs Vanlose Stairway , Northern Muse (Solid Ground) and Cleaning Windows were among the most frequently played pieces in his concerts in the following decades. An appearance in the Grugahalle in Essen on April 4, 1982 - Rockpalast Nacht , broadcast throughout Europe on television by ARD - increased Van Morrison's popularity in Europe.
Morrison picked up the mood of Beautiful Vision on Inarticulate Speech of the Heart . It was dedicated to the founder of the Scientology sect, L. Ron Hubbard . A Sense of Wonder presented itself more cautiously . This album was again more Irish-Celtic oriented. It contains two pieces played by the folk rock band Moving Hearts . The record also contains a song Let the Slave , in which Van Morrison recited the poem The Price of Experience by William Blake . This was followed by the album No Guru, No Method, No Teacher . After its appearance, Morrison appeared with big bands , so with the Denmark Radio Big Band , the BBC Big Band and finally at the Montreux Jazz Festival 1989 with the Dallas Jazz Orchestra . Some of these concerts met with a very positive response, while at others the rather static arrangements were criticized.
After the record Poetic Champions Compose followed in 1988 a successful cooperation with the Irish folk band The Chieftains , with whom Van Morrison had recorded a TV show. Together they decided to record an album of Irish traditionals ( Irish Heartbeat , on which two Morrison compositions can be heard in a traditional arrangement) and to go on tour. Towards the end of a concert tour through Europe, however, there was such strong tension between the musicians that the project was abandoned. However, they stayed in contact, as further isolated recordings with the Chieftains show.
In 1989 Van Morrison presented an album called Avalon Sunset , which contains Christian-inspired songs in a meditative and calm mood, some with orchestral arrangements by Fiachra Trench . The duet Whenever God Shines His Light On Me with Cliff Richard was able to place in the UK charts.
The 1990s
One of his appearances was broadcast in July 1990 at the Montreux Jazz Festival on Swiss Radio DRS . Morrison offered a cross-section of his artistic development since the 1960s and rearranged his songs. At the same time, he and many other musicians took part in a major musical event that Roger Waters , the former musical head of Pink Floyd , organized on Potsdamer Platz in Berlin : a performance of The Wall in allusion to the fall of the Berlin Wall .
This was followed by works rated differently by the critics. On the album Too Long in Exile (1993) he turned to the blues and played one of his most famous compositions, Gloria from the 1960s, together with his idol John Lee Hooker .
Van Morrison hired the young singer Brian Kennedy for recordings and tours and had him sing his songs on stage - supposedly because Morrison was feeling drained at the time. The successful in Great Britain album Days Like This , the title song of which was declared the anthem of the Irish peace movement , was carried by an extremely gloomy mood, which was in complete contrast to the much-noticed liaison with the model Michelle Rocca . Morrison understood his concerts at this time as "Jazz and Soul Revue"; he performed some very long songs and medleys with a large cast. The concerts could last up to two and a half hours.
Van Morrison went back to his roots. How Long Has This Been Going On contained jazz standards, Tell Me Something was dedicated to the works of jazz composer Mose Allison , Van Morrison played with Lonnie Donegan on The Skiffle Sessions , and Skiffle was the music that many British musicians of the 1960s played Had influenced years. Finally, Morrison recorded a duet record with country singer Linda Gail Lewis , sister of Jerry Lee Lewis : You Win Again with Country Music Standards . In the course of working and performing together, the singer claimed that Van Morrison urged her to divorce her (eighth) husband. He also sexually harassed her. Five of the thirteen charges were eventually examined in court and Morrison was acquitted after two years. For him, the matter was settled after a comprehensive apology from Linda Gail.
Van Morrison received many honors in the 1990s. Among other things, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 - he did not appear on the occasion.
The years since 2000
Not only the record You Win Again , which was influenced by country music, caused controversy among fans and critics, but also the two following albums, Down The Road and What's Wrong With This Picture .
The rather calm album Magic Time was immediately able to place itself in the charts in 2005. In 2006 Van Morrison returned to country music on his album Pay the Devil and performed for the first time at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville . In March 2008 the album Keep it Simple was released . On 7./8. November 2008 there was a live recording of the 1968 album Astral Weeks at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles . At the end of 2012 the album Born to Sing: No Plan B was released . In March 2015 Van Morrison published a retrospective in duet form - his album Duets: Re-Working The Catalog with artists like Mick Hucknall and Mark Knopfler as well as old companions like Chris Farlowe and Georgie Fame.
On June 12, 2015, Morrison was raised to the nobility by Elizabeth II and has had the prefix Sir since then .
