The 500 best albums of all time (Rolling Stone)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 500 best albums of all time (The Greatest Albums of All Time) is in 2003 by the music magazine Rolling Stone list of the best albums released in their opinion all time. It is based on the vote of 273 musicians, critics and record companies.

The list is the list of the US parent magazine. The following year, a list with the same name but not identical appeared in the German edition; German-speaking artists were also taken into account.

In November 2004, a list of the 500 best songs of all time followed in the US edition . In 2009 the magazine polled again and published an updated edition of the list.

The US list

  2. Pet Sounds , The Beach Boys
  3. Revolver , The Beatles
  4. Highway 61 Revisited , Bob Dylan
  5. Rubber Soul , The Beatles
  6. What's going on , Marvin Gaye
  7. Exile on Main St. , The Rolling Stones
  8. London Calling , The Clash

criticism

The selection was not without contradiction. Was particularly criticized

  • she is too focused on the 1960s and 1970s;
  • Rock is preferred too much, jazz and hip-hop are disadvantaged and certain rock genres such as progressive rock and metal are as good as not represented;
  • although six of the first ten albums came from Great Britain (four by the Beatles , one by the Rolling Stones and one by The Clash ), US productions were overweighted;
  • English-language albums are listed almost without exception;
  • subsequent greatest hits - and best-of - compilations would really have no place on such a list;
  • The placements in the list partly contradict previous reviews of albums by the same magazine, such as Nevermind by Nirvana , which claims 17th place in the US list, but only received three out of five stars in the original rating.

Even so, the list became and has remained influential. Media, fans and retailers keep pointing out the placement of a particular album on this list. Ultimately, however, some American experts, who were initially critics of this list, admitted that it gave a satisfactory overview of influential and good music.
