List of artists with the highest number of records sold worldwide
The list of performers with the highest number of records sold worldwide includes artists who, according to information from independent and reliable sources, are said to have sold over 75 million records. Sound carriers include albums , singles , compilations , video albums and, as virtual sound carriers, downloads of singles and full albums.
At this point it should be noted above all that current performers like Taylor Swift or Rihanna have to face completely different market conditions than “traditional” artists like Madonna or Michael Jackson . While before the beginning of the download and streaming age the artists placed themselves in the charts by selling their vinyl records, albums or maxi singles, nowadays the popularity of a song in the charts is measured almost exclusively by download clicks and streaming numbers . This list should therefore only be used with caution, since an entire physically sold album as well as a virtual single download are rated as individual "sound carriers". Because both media are not of the same value, this list cannot be regarded as a popularity gauge - especially when comparing traditional and current performers.
The performers in the tables below are listed by sales and in descending order, with the highest sales at the top. Performers with equally high sales figures are sorted according to the total certified sales figures. Sales figures such as that of Nielsen SoundScan, which are sometimes published by Billboard magazine , have not been included in the certified sales column. Currently, the Beatles are at the top of this list as they are the top selling band in the world. Elvis Presley , who is second in the list, is the highest-selling solo artist in the world.
The list includes both the official awards for music sales ( certifications ) of the most important music markets as well as the details of the official music associations and major media about the total sales. The total sales are estimates and projections that are officially attributed to the performers, as there is no institution that records global sales in a complete and verifiable manner. The information depends on the statistical and journalistic diligence of the publisher. Nowadays the awards are based on verified information about the number of actually delivered or sold sound carriers and are awarded by the regional associations of the IFPI . The units awarded were taken from the available databases of the national associations of the music industry . An award is only given if a certain number of units sold or shipped has exceeded a certain number of units and an award has been registered. In addition, the awards are not available in all countries and in many countries only recently.
All performers on this list must be able to prove their estimated total sales figures to at least 20% with certifications. That's why Cliff Richard , Diana Ross , Modern Talking , the Scorpions , Charles Aznavour , Bing Crosby , Nana Mouskouri , Deep Purple , Iron Maiden , Tom Jones , the Jackson Five , Dionne Warwick , the Andrews Sisters , Luciano Pavarotti , Dolly Parton , Ozzy Osbourne , Enrique Iglesias , the Spice Girls , Andrea Bocelli, and Duran Duran were not on this list. The percentage of certified sales figures required increases the more up-to-date the artist is, so that artists who were in the charts before 1975 only have to prove their estimated sales figures for at least 20% certifications. In contrast, more up-to-date performers such as Bruno Mars , Katy Perry , Lady Gaga , Rihanna and Taylor Swift have to prove their total sales figures to at least 75% certifications.
Although this list is primarily based on estimated sales figures from the most reliable sources possible, some sales figures require further research to avoid the inflated claims that are often published by record labels for commercial purposes. Sources need to speak of “phonograms” (singles, albums and videos) and not just “albums”.
Performers sorted by estimated sales
- To ensure the highest possible level of verifiability, this list includes information from news agencies and highly regarded organizations related to the music industry such as MTV , VH1 , Billboard and Rolling Stone .
- The total certified sales figures in this table include albums, singles (including downloads) and videos.
- The market order in this table is based on the retail value of all phonograms in the respective markets. The market with the highest sales is at the top and the market with the lowest sales is at the bottom.
- The column for certified sales contains markets whose databases indicate at least 100,000 certified units sold for the artist.

Remarks
Labeling systems have been introduced gradually over the past half century, so labeling databases do not cover all sales. Some (or all) of the phonograms released and sold prior to the introduction of the award systems may not be available in the awards databases. The following are the years of launch, from largest to smallest market based on retail sales:
- USA : 1958
- Japan : 1989 (Online gold / platinum award database covers awards given since 2003. Million-seller database covers records since 1989)
- Germany : 1975
- United Kingdom : 1973
- France : 1973
- Australia : 1997 (online database covers awards given since 1997. Awards in Australia since 1975)
- Canada : 1975
- Netherlands : 1978
- Italy : 2009 (online database covers awards given since 2009. Awards have existed in Italy since the 1990s)
- Brazil : 1990
- Belgium : 1997
- Austria : 1990
- Spain : 2004 (Awards given since 2004 are shown in the weekly chart publications. Awards have been made in Spain since the mid-1970s)
- Switzerland : 1989
- Mexico : 1999
- Sweden : 1987
- Poland : 1995
- Argentina : 1980
- Finland : 1971
- Ireland : 2005
- New Zealand : July 1978
Certified sales can sometimes exceed actual sales when stores order more records than they can sell, as awards are given to retailers after deliveries. But mostly the actual sales figures are higher than the certified sales figures, since music labels have to pay a certain fee for the awarding of the awards and the awards are given within certain limits. Music labels usually apply for awards after a sound carrier has exceeded an award limit, which means that the awards only appear in the databases a certain time after the limit has been reached.
Due to the music piracy that began between 1999 and 2000, global music sales have fallen, which has resulted in the awarding organizations lowering the award limits. See the changes in the allocation limits in the following markets:
- USA (The US allocation limits for singles before 1989 were gold = 1,000,000 and platinum = 2,000,000. In addition, the US allocation limits for extended plays before September 1996 were: gold = 250,000 and platinum = 500,000)
- Canada (The Canadian allocation limits for singles were before February 1982: gold = 75,000 and platinum = 150,000)
- Austria :
According to a 2009 report by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry , an estimated 95% of music downloads are illegal. Illegal downloads are not included in the award-winning sales and estimated total sales for an artist.
