The Wanganui Chronicle is New Zealand's oldest regional daily newspaper . The newspaper has its local editorial office in Wanganui .

history

The first issue of the Wanganui Chronicle appeared on September 18, 1856. In the beginning, every fortnight, the paper cost six pence per issue. As early as 1853, Wanganui was the first daily newspaper in the country to draw attention to itself across New Zealand with the Wanganui Record . But the leaf only lasted a few weeks and then disappeared forever. In contrast, the Wanganui Chronicle managed 10 years after its first edition to be published three times a week from 1866 onwards. In 1871 there was a change to the daily publication frequency, which is still the standard today. Henry Stokes is considered to be the founder of the newspaper , who, together with a technically experienced teacher from the Wanganui Collegiate School, designed a printing press for the newspaper and thus made the first edition possible.

In the 1860s, the Wanganui Chronicle got competition. Published by the later Prime Minister John Ballance , the Evening Herald , which appeared from June 4, 1867 and was renamed the Wanganui Herald in 1876 , became a serious threat to the Chronicle as an evening newspaper until the paper itself ran into economic difficulties in the 1880s. The second rival paper, the Wanganui Times , lasted less than a decade.

In 1875 Gilbert Carson took over the Chronicle , was mayor of the city between 1881 and 1884 and later a member of the House of Representatives . As a politician and with his Chronicle , Carson became an opponent to John Ballance and his Wanganui Herald . In the 1970s, both papers finally came into one hand, but continued to be published separately as the morning paper and the evening paper. From 1986, when the Wanganui Herald was discontinued as a daily newspaper and only appeared as a community paper under the name Wanganui Midweek , the Wanganui Chronicle was finally the only daily newspaper in the town and region.

today

Since November 1997 the Wanganui Chronicle has belonged to the Australian media group APN News & Media , which merged 16 New Zealand newspapers and media companies under W & H Newspapers Limited and later renamed APN New Zealand Limited . APN New Zealand Limited has been operating under the name NZME since January 2015 . Publishing .

On August 21, 2013, the online offering of all New Zealand newspapers belonging to APN News & Media was reorganized and brought together under the leadership of the New Zealand Herald .

In 2014, the Wanganui Chronicle was one of the very few New Zealand daily newspapers to increase its average daily circulation slightly from 9,820 in 2013 to 10,051 in 2014.
