The Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment , in Māori Hīkina Whakatutuki , is a Ministry and Public Service Department in New Zealand that is responsible for all corporate matters.

It operates in 46 offices across New Zealand and in eight different business groups . In addition, the ministry has 14 overseas offices. The Ministry was responsible for the administration of NZ $ 4.9 billion expenditure in 14 different portfolios (business areas) .

Foundation and goals

The ministry was established on July 1, 2012. When it was founded, the Ministry of Economic Development , Ministry of Science and Innovation , Department of Labor and the Department of Building and Housing were merged into one ministry, which at the time employed a total of 3,200 people.

The aim at the time was to play a central role in shaping and implementing a strong economy in the country. The individual goals that were set were:

  • A building of trustworthy, competitive and effectively regulated markets with the participation of confident businesses and well-informed consumers
  • Ensuring that businesses have access to the skills they need and that current and future demand for skills matches supply
  • Ensuring safe and fair jobs
  • The development and support of a high-performance science and innovation system
  • To improve the capabilities of companies - including ideas, access to capital and relationships - so that they can be successful internationally
  • Supporting the development of an efficient, effective infrastructure
  • The appreciation of New Zealand's natural resources
