  • 1972 - the establishment of the Department of Social Welfare , in which the Social Security Department and the Child Welfare Division of the Department of Education were integrated.
  • 1992 - the restructuring of the Department of Social Welfare
  • 1999 - the establishment of the Ministry of Social Policy and restructuring of the social area

to name only the most important ones here.

minister

The minister responsible for the ministry has been Carmel Sepuloni from the New Zealand Labor Party since November 26, 2017 . Other ministers cover parts of the ministry's tasks.

tasks and goals

The ministry, which has around 130 service and contact centers across the country  , supports around 1.25 million New Zealanders at least once a year thanks to its diverse range of services. Among them were around 778,000 people in 2019 who received pension payments, around 292,000 people who were dependent on social assistance, around 106,000 people who did not have enough income from their work and received additional financial support, and around 168,000 students who received allowances or got loans.

The ministry's goal is to support all New Zealanders so that they are safe, empowered and independent. To this end, they should receive the support they need, be given the opportunity to live in integrative and supportive communities and participate in life in society in a positive way and be able to exploit their potential.
