The Ministry for Women , in Māori Minitatanga mō ngā Wāhine , is a ministry and Public Service Department in New Zealand that is solely responsible for the interests of women in New Zealand.

history

On November 19, 1984, the cabinet of the then government of the New Zealand Labor Party approved the establishment of the Ministry of Women's Affairs , from which the Ministry for Women was formed in December 2014 .

But the ministry's origins go back to the 1970s when the Women's Liberation Movement was formed in New Zealand. This movement made demands such as equal access to education and employment opportunities, equal pay, free child care, and free contraception and abortion on demand.

In 1973, under pressure from the movement , the then Labor government finally formed a special committee to deal with issues of women's rights, and after the United Nations declared the International Year of Women in 1975, the government decided to set up a committee for women. In 1981 this committee was replaced by the Advisory Committee on Women's Affairs (ACWA). In November 1984 the then Labor government finally set up the Ministry of Women's Affairs and in March 1985 defined and managed it as an independent ministry.

goals and tasks

The objectives of the ministry acting as advisor to the government are:

  • ensure that the contributions of girls and women are valued in society,
  • ensure that all girls and women are financially secure and can fully participate in social life and have success,
  • ensure that all girls and women are free from all forms of violence and harassment.

For this purpose, the following main tasks of the ministry were formulated:

  • Advising New Zealand policy on improving outcomes for women in New Zealand
