The Celebrity Apex was commissioned on February 1, 2015 as the second unit of the Edge class and laid down on July 6, 2018 under the hull number K34 in the shipyard of Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire . The launch took place on May 17, 2019, the delivery to Celebrity Cruises on March 27, 2020.

The COVID-19 pandemic delayed the planned commissioning of the ship to an unknown time. The official christening of the ship was originally planned for March 30, 2020, the maiden voyage for April 5. The Celebrity Apex is still in Saint-Nazaire, the commissioning is now scheduled for autumn 2020.

On March 26, 2020, the Ministry of Health of the Pays de la Loire region announced that seven crew members of the Celebrity Apex were suffering from COVID-19. At this point in time there were already more than 1,400 crew members on board the ship. By April 7, the number rose to 217 sufferers, two of whom had to be treated in intensive care units.
