history
The Crown Law Office was founded in 1875 and initially only acted as a consultant and was also responsible for drafting laws until the Law Drafting Office was founded in 1907. With the appointment of John William Salmond as Solicitor-General ( Crown Attorney ) in 1910, the Crown Law Office was given responsibility for prosecution in addition to legal work. In 1918 the Law Drafting Office was taken out of the responsibility of the Solicitor-General and later renamed the Parliamentary Counsel Office . With the creation of the Crown Solicitor Network in the 1920s, the Crown Law Office then gained access to the expertise of recognized lawyers from whom it could seek legal advice. As of August 2018, there are 17 lawyers in the network.
