Louis Michel Thibault (born September 29, 1750 in Picquigny , † November 3, 1815 in Cape Town ) was a French architect in the Cape Colony. He designed numerous public buildings in Cape Town and other parts of the colony.

Life

His place of birth has not yet been confirmed for certain. Both Picquigny near Amiens and Paris are given. He was baptized in Paris . Thibault completed his first training at the Académie royale d'architecture in Paris. Here he studied a. a. with Ange-Jacques Gabriel , who was a representative of French classicism . Then he acquired from 1781 in the service of the Corps des ponts et des chaussées de France (German: "Engineer Corps of Bridges and Highways France") further knowledge in the field of military engineering under Colonel Charles-Daniel de Meuron .

When he had finished his training, Thibault found a job in 1783 with the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in the group of their engineers. This brought him to the Cape Colony, which was then still dominated by Dutch. Here he gained significant reputation and was the chief architect ( Chief Architect ) on the Cape. He succeeded in implementing the ambitious building project of the governor (1784–1791) Cornelis Jacob van de Graeff .

After the British came to power in the Cape Colony, Thibault retained his position as Chief Architect and Inspector of Buildings .

In 1811 he took over the role of Government Surveyor (German: " Government Surveyor " in a leading role), where he worked tirelessly in all weather conditions. He died in the winter season of 1815 and was buried in the Woltemade Cemetery in Cape Town .
