Uitenhage ( Afrikaans : [øjtənˈhɑːxə]) is a city in the Eastern Cape Province near Port Elizabeth in South Africa with 103,639 inhabitants (as of 2011).

history

Uitenhage was founded on April 25, 1804 by District Judge Jacob Glen Cuyler and named by the Dutch Governor of the Cape Colony , Jan Willem Janssens , in honor of the Cape Commissioner General Jacob Abraham Uitenhage de Mist. Uitenhage was formed from part of the Graaff-Reinet district (shortly after its short-lived split).

The Cape Colony gained a certain degree of independence when the "Responsible Government" was proclaimed in 1872. In 1875 the Cape Government took over the insignificant railroad location Uitenhage from John Molteno, built it into the Cape Government Railways and began building lines connecting Uitenhage with Port Elizabeth and the South African inland. Two years later, in 1877, Uitenhage was declared a parish.

Almost a hundred years later, as part of the Republic of South Africa, Uitenhage became the center of resistance against apartheid. In 1985, Uitenhage police opened fire on a funeral procession that killed a number of unarmed people.

In 2000 the city was merged with Port Elizabeth in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality .

Industry

Uitenhage is known for the large-scale industry located there. There is a Volkswagen plant there , which, with 5,600 workers, is the largest car factory in all of Africa. There is also a plant for the American tire manufacturer Goodyear . The Alexander Park Industrial automotive supplier park was created directly next to the Volkswagen plant, where automotive suppliers have set up their production facilities in the immediate vicinity.
