Land Information New Zealand aims to :

- Protect and protect land rights of New Zealand citizens
- ensure that state-owned land is managed sustainably.
Various government tasks based on geographic information are bundled in the department. The department's official mission is to build and maintain trust in land ownership rights and geographic information, and to develop geographic information markets.
It focuses on three core areas:
- Transaction management - LINZ operates the national system for property rights and their transfer, comparable to the German land registry office
- Information management - obtaining, gathering, compiling and making available geographic information, from information to property rights
- Land Management - this includes the management of various Crown-owned lands in New Zealand
Transaction management
LINZ is responsible for the legal framework and the systems that determine property rights to land and the handling of them in New Zealand. It
- maintains and improves the regulations that define property rights and enable their transfer
- manages the process of title transfer, creation of new title, and recording of changes in ownership and title to land
- ensures a safe environment for buying, selling and dividing land through legally sound title and an accurate system for defining property boundaries
- operates a uniform national system for property valuation
- manages foreign investments in New Zealand under the Overseas Investment Act 2005 .
Information management
The agency provides a large amount of geographical information, which is used on the one hand for its own tasks in the administration of property rights to land, on the other hand this information is used for numerous other tasks such as national security, assistance in emergencies, determination of electoral districts and commercial purposes.
The agency creates and manages state databases for survey data, maps, hydrography and property ownership. Due to the task of making this data usable on a broad basis, in New Zealand much of this information is available in electronic form for everyone and distributed free of charge on the Internet and is placed under copyright licenses that permit wide use.
The LINZ manages the geodetic survey data of New Zealand and makes the survey points available in a database that is accessible free of charge. It creates and administers the official topographic map series of New Zealand. The current map series is based on the Topo50 map series on a scale of 1: 50,000; a Topo250 map series on a scale of 1: 250,000 and a number of overview maps with larger scales are also generated. This map series can be downloaded free of charge from the agency's website, and printed maps are printed and sold by sales partners.
LINZ is also the body responsible for providing nautical information for shipping in New Zealand waters. This includes the official sea charts of New Zealand NZ202 , which are also available for download free of charge, and the paper charts required for seafaring are sold by sales partners. The map data is made available for download in electronic form for navigation systems in two formats: NZMariner (raster maps) and Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs). The facility maintains the marine messaging system Notices to Mariners , which provides map corrections, warnings of current hazards, changes in lighthouses, radio signals and the like as a PDF file on a weekly basis. In addition, a will tide information system with information talk to tide levels and a notification system can be reported about the seafaring Agency new threats to shipping.
