The Oranga Tamariki - Ministry for Children , in Māori Oranga Tamariki is a Ministry and Public Service Department (authority of the civil service) in New Zealand , which is responsible for the welfare of children and adolescents in the country.

history

The forerunner of the ministry was the Department of Child, Youth and Family Services (CYFS), which was founded in 1999 and emerged from the Children and Young Persons Service (CYPS). In April 2017 the Department had to give way to the newly founded Ministry for Vulnerable Children , Oranga Tamariki . The legal basis at the time was the Oranga Tamariki Act 1989 and the Children's and Young People's Well-being Act 1989 , both of which were passed on May 27, 1989 and initially wanted to have the child 's well-being secured by the Ministry of Health . The law in its updated form as of July 14, 2017 is still valid today.

Until 2016, around 60,000 children were reported to the department each year . Around 4,900 children were in special care. But with the reorganization and renaming of the agency, the government of the National Party under Bill English tried to reduce the number of children being cared for from 5,453 in 2017 to a few hundred.

With the change of government to the Labor Party under Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern , the ministry was reorganized and renamed Oranga Tamariki - Ministry for Children . Their investigations revealed that a total of 13,966 cases of child abuse occurred between April 2017 and March 2018, whereupon safeguarding the best interests of the child was declared a focus of the government.
