Sir Simon William "Bill" English KNZM (born December 30, 1961 in Lumsden ) is a New Zealand politician. English was the 39th Prime Minister of New Zealand from December 12, 2016 to October 25, 2017  .

Life

Bill English was born in Lumsden on December 30, 1961, attended St Patrick's College in Silverstream, Upper Hutt, and then studied Commerce at the University of Otago and English Literature at Victoria University in Wellington . He started out as a financial analyst and later went back to his family's farm in Dipton near Lumsden. From there he started his career as a politician.

Political career

English is a member of the conservative New Zealand National Party and has been a member of the New Zealand Parliament since October 27, 1990 . From October 8, 2001 to October 28, 2003, he led his party's opposition in parliament, from February 29, 1996, he held various positions as minister, including that of finance minister, which he held for almost 11 months in 1999 and then from 19 November 2008 to December 12, 2016. During this time, English also served as Deputy Prime Minister alongside John Key , who handed over the post of Prime Minister to English in December 2016. In the general election in September 2017 , the New Zealand National Party, with English as the top candidate, became the strongest force despite some losses. But closed the New Zealand Labor Party , with its top candidate Jacinda Ardern a coalition with the party New Zealand First of Winston Peters , tolerated by the Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand . On October 26, 2017, Ardern was sworn in as Prime Minister and English took on the role of opposition leader. On June 4, 2018, he was knighted as a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit .
