Don Brash
Donald Thomas Brash (born September 24, 1940 in Wanganui ) is a New Zealand politician . Until 2006 he was the chairman of the New Zealand National Party and opposition leader in the New Zealand House of Representatives . John Key was his successor .
Brash studied economics, history and political science at the University of Canterbury and received his PhD from the Australian National University on American investments in Australian industry. From 1966 to 1971 Brash worked for the World Bank and was then a director of several New Zealand companies and authorities. In 1988 he became governor of New Zealand's central bank and remained so until his election to the New Zealand House of Representatives in 2002.
There he first acted as the National Party's financial policy spokesman and was elected chairman in 2003. He lost the 2005 general election to the coalition under Prime Minister Helen Clark .
Brash changed parties and became party chairman of ACT New Zealand on April 30, 2011 . On November 26, 2011, he resigned from the chair because his party did not win enough votes in the 2011 general election.
