history
The National Party was founded in Wellington on May 13-14, 1936. It emerged from the government coalition of 1915 between the Reform Party and the Liberal Party . While the Reform Party was more rural, the Liberal Party was more based in the cities. The amalgamation of the previously competing parties was a reaction to the rise of the Labor Party , which appointed the Prime Minister for the first time after the 1935 election. However, the merger led to only a small increase in the vote in the 1938 election.
In the 1949 election, the party achieved a parliamentary majority for the first time and provided the Prime Minister with Sidney Holland . Holland remained in office until a serious illness in 1957. His successor Keith Holyoake could not win the election that took place shortly after the takeover and had to wait until the next election before he took office again. At the party conference in 1972 he announced his resignation after twelve years in office and made his previous deputy Jack Marshall Prime Minister. This lost the election in the same year against the popular Norman Kirk . After he died in office, Robert Muldoon succeeded in finding his successor in 1975. The Think Big era began under Robert Muldoon in New Zealand, and Muldoon was voted out of office in 1984. This was followed by the longest opposition period for the National Party until then , which only ended with Jim Bolger's election as Prime Minister in 1990. He was followed in 1997 by Jenny Shipley as New Zealand's first female prime minister, who was defeated by the Labor Party two years later. Since then the National Party has been in the role of the opposition faction. In 2008, after nine years of center-left politics, the National Party won the election in New Zealand.
Although once again become the strongest party, had in October 2017, the National Party due to the result of the parliamentary elections of September 2017, the government affairs at the Labor Party post , which under the leadership of Jacinda Ardern a coalition with the party New Zealand First of Winston Peters came in and the government could provide.
