The International Democratic Union (IDU, English International Democrat Union ) is a working group of 70 conservative and Christian Democratic parties. Another 30 or so parties belong to only one regional subgroup. The youth organization is the IYDU .

The IDU sees itself as a forum that provides the basis for contacts, discussions and networking among conservative and Christian parties around the world.

The current Chairman is former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper . He and the other officials of the IDU are elected by a summit of the chairmen of the member parties held every three to four years. The German CDU politician David McAllister , MEP, is one of the vice-presidents .

history

Founded in 1983, the IDU provides a forum where parties with similar beliefs can come together and exchange views on political and organizational interests in order to learn from each other, act together, socialize, and speak with one voice to help the world over Promote democracy. The founding members of the IDU include the British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher , the US Vice-President George Bush Sr. , Jacques Chirac , the then Paris Mayor and later President of France , the German Chancellor Helmut Kohl and other party leaders.

According to this, a country can only develop its full potential if it recognizes the ideals of liberal democracy , the freedom of the individual and the need for independent economic growth and free, competitive corporate economies . The IDU sees its emergence as a response to a globalized world in which a parliamentary decision in one country can influence politics in another.

Through the IDU, the member parties can exchange political ideas, support one another in order to discuss and deepen political arguments and thus ultimately win elections. There are regular meetings of the entire IDU and its regional organizations.

At IDU Executive Meetings, briefings on current global political and geostrategic topics are dealt with. In addition to board meetings and meetings of the IDU Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, the IDU organizes events such as the Young Leaders' Forum as well as information trips and election observations . Every four years a major event takes place parallel to the Republican Convention , the last in September 2012 in Tampa, Florida.

International Women Democrat Union

IWDU is an association dedicated to the advancement of women and the processing of important women's issues within the global family of center-right parties. The organization consists of female members of like-minded parties. The IWDU offers female executives opportunities for networking, strengthening and visibility and encourages them to take on political offices.

International Young Democrat Union

The International Young Democrat Union (IYDU) is a global alliance of youth organizations of center-right parties linked by a common desire for more freedom and less government. Founded in 1981, two years before its parent organization, the International Democrat Union (IDU), which was formed in 1983, the IYDU has grown to more than 120 members from over 81 different nations.

Today the IYDU unites members with a rich history, culture and political traditions, linked by a common commitment to freedom and the fight against socialism . Throughout the year, IYDU hosts a number of events around the world. Current and future managers network, discuss ideologies, exchange ideas and build friendships. Participation in the IYDU is, according to its own account, "a commitment to a better world that is created through a real democratic process".
