The International Young Democrat Union ( IYDU for short ) is a non-governmental umbrella organization of young center-right political organizations around the world that are committed to promoting freedom and the rule of law.

In German-speaking countries, the Young Union of Germany , the Young People's Party of Austria , the Young Generation in the South Tyrolean People's Party , the Young Christian Democratic People's Party of Switzerland and the Young Swiss People's Party are member associations of the IYDU.

The first chairman of the IYDU Elmar Brok MEP is the chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament.

Goals and principles

The four basic principles of the organization are democracy, respect for human rights, free markets and free trade. Particular attention is paid to halting state interventionism and socialism around the world. With this IYDU wants to make an active contribution to the work of the IDU (International Democrat Union), to which it is based in terms of content and organization. German members in IDU are the parties CDU and CSU. The aim of the IYDU events is to intensify the contact between the member organizations, to exchange ideas and to develop them further, which promote the principles of the organization. In this context, the “Campaign for Religious Freedom” is currently being carried out and another campaign against left-wing populism is in preparation. Special attention is paid to Belarus, where member organizations of the IYDU are active under difficult political conditions.

Structure and structure

IYDU has over 125 member organizations from over 80 countries on all continents. They are all close to the center-right parties in the respective countries and regions and thus take an active part in political events in their countries. The Junge Union is a member from Germany . The IYDU can join any national, regional or international political organization that supports the “Declaration of Principles” of the organization and is committed to its goals and principles. The "Declaration of Principles" is the founding document of the IYDU. IYDU was founded at the Washington, DC ( United States ) conference in 1981.

The Council ("Council") consists of the patron, the officials and the member organizations of the IYDU. The council elects officers and receives reports from both officers and member organizations. The board of directors oversees day-to-day business and is, among other things, a. responsible for setting the budget.

The current chairman of the IYDU is Gerti Bogdani from the Youth Forum of the Democratic Party (Albania). German board member is board member Thomas Schneider (Junge Union). The organization is sponsored by former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher .

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall , the IYDU annual congress took place from November 25th to 28th, 2009 in Berlin. The then candidate of the Junge Union Deutschlands, Daniel Walther, was unanimously elected chairman at the subsequent council meeting in London in December 2010. In March 2011, a board meeting with around 30 participants took place in Erbil , Iraq . From 23 to 26 The Freedom Forum 2011 in Bogotá (Colombia) followed in June , the second board meeting in Moscow in September and a study trip to South Korea in October. At the Council Meeting with the annual elections from 9th to 13th January 2012 in Sydney, Australia, Nicolas Figari (Chile) was elected as the new Chairman and Aris Kalafatis (Greece) as Deputy Chairman. From 12th to 15th April 2012 at the first board meeting after Figari's job-related resignation, his deputy Aris Kalafatis (Greece) was elected as the new chairman. From 12th to 15th In July 2012 IYDU strengthened its position in the MENA region with the Freedom Forum in Rabat / Morocco. Together with numerous participants from the region, ways were sought and discussed to support the democratic movements in MENA. The “Arab Spring” started primarily from the younger generation.

The admission of over 20 new member associations to the Sydney Council Meeting shows the high attractiveness of the IYDU for young political associations - worldwide.
