Propuesta Republicana (abbreviated PRO , Spanish about republican proposal ) is an Argentine conservative - liberal party . It emerged from a party alliance founded in the city of Buenos Aires in 2005 between the only locally significant group Compromiso para el Cambio and the nationally active party Recrear para el Crecimiento , a split from the UCR .

PRO has been the mayor of Buenos Aires since December 2007 and has been recognized as a national party since 2010. From 2015 to 2019 she provided Mauricio Macri as the country's president .

history

The Compromiso para el Cambio party has existed since 2002, its original name was Creer y Crecer . Its founder and best-known exponent is the entrepreneur Mauricio Macri , who, among other things, was president of the Boca Juniors sports club . Macri ran in August 2003 for the mayoral elections in Buenos Aires. He reached first place in the first ballot, but had to admit defeat in the runoff election to the candidate of the Frente País Solidario , Aníbal Ibarra .

In the same year, the Recrear para el Crecimiento party was also created as an election platform for the politician Ricardo López Murphy , who was temporarily Minister of Economics in the Fernando de la Rúas government . López Murphy missed with a third place in September 2003 the runoff election for the presidency, which Néstor Kirchner was ultimately able to win because of the rejection of his opponent Carlos Menem .

In 2005, the two parties formed an electoral alliance for the parliamentary elections that year. Propuesta Republicana competed in Buenos Aires, the province of Buenos Aires , Entre Ríos and Mendoza , but only achieved a good result in the capital with over 30%, while in the other districts with values around 10% the results fell short of expectations.

In 2007 Macri presented himself again for the mayoral elections in Buenos Aires. In the first ballot he was able to significantly improve his result from 2003 and moved into the runoff election with a large margin over second-placed Daniel Filmus , which he won with 60.96%. He took office in December 2007.

The alliance did not present an official candidate for the presidential election. However, López Murphy stood up for Recrear and was unofficially supported by Macri. However, compared to 2003, he had to accept landslide-like losses and only got 1.43% of the valid votes and thus on 5th place.

In the 2009 parliamentary elections, PRO competed in a list connection with conservative members of the Peronist party who were against the Cristina Fernández de Kirchner government under the abbreviation Unión-Pro . PRO was able to increase the number of seats in the House of Representatives from 9 to 11.

In 2011 Macri was able to defend his office as mayor of Buenos Aires with a high victory in the second round. In the run-up to the 2011 presidential election , Macri had considered running as a presidential candidate; in surveys, however, he was far behind Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and about on a par with Ricardo Alfonsín and Eduardo Duhalde . Finally, PRO supported the alliances Frente Popular and Compromiso Federal in the election , but they only reached fifth and fourth place. In the simultaneous parliamentary elections, PRO only ran in the city of Buenos Aires as well as the provinces of La Rioja and Santa Fe and achieved a total result of 2%, with the city of Buenos Aires doing best with 19.3%.

Before the 2015 presidential election, PRO, the UCR and the Coalición Cívica ARI founded the Alliance Cambiemos (for example, let's change ). She and her candidate Mauricio Macri won the presidential election in the runoff election. In 2017 Cambiemos won more seats in the midterm elections for Congress, but does not have an absolute majority there. For the 2019 presidential election , the electoral alliance renamed itself Juntos por el Cambio and ran for a second term with Macri. However, he was defeated by the challengers Alberto Fernández / Cristina Fernández ( Frente de Todos ).

According to its own statements on the website, the party wants to revive the “spirit” of Arturo Frondizi , who was Argentine president for the Unión Cívica Radical between 1958 and 1962 . Overall, PRO can be assigned to moderate conservatism , and elements of economic liberalism are also present.

In the party program, the concept of security is very important, so through targeted prevention, but also consistent and rapid application of criminal law against delinquents and the creation of rapid trials in the judiciary, crime is to be combated. One of the party's best-known demands was the creation of a separate police division for the city of Buenos Aires, for whose security the Federal Police ( Policía Federal ) was previously responsible. The division called Policía Metropolitana was established between 2008 and 2011 during Mauricio Macri's first term as mayor of Buenos Aires.
