Ricardo Alfonsín (born November 2, 1951 in Chascomús ) is an Argentine politician of the Unión Cívica Radical .

Career

Alfonsín is the third son of former Argentine President Raúl Alfonsín . After studying to be a teacher in Chascomús, he studied law at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata , but graduated from the Universidad de Buenos Aires .

He held his first office as a national delegate to the UCR in 1993. In the 1999 election he was elected Member of the Parliament of the Province of Buenos Aires and remained there for a legislative period until 2003. In 2007 he ran for the office of governor, but failed clearly against Daniel Scioli . In 2009 he was elected member of the National Congress for the UCR under the umbrella of the center-left electoral alliance Acuerdo Cívico y Social , which also included the ARI and the Socialists .

In 2011 he ran as the UCR's top candidate for the presidential election . He ran with Javier González Fraga as the vice-presidential candidate and in the first ballot took third place with 11.15% of the votes, behind Hermes Binner (16.87%) and the incumbent President Cristina Kirchner , who won an absolute majority with 53.96% .
