Daniel Osvaldo Scioli (born January 13, 1957 in Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine politician and former motor sportsman . From 2007 to 2015 he was governor of the most populous province of Buenos Aires .

biography

Scioli studied Marketing at the Universidad Argentina de la Empresa (UADE) in Buenos Aires . In 1986 he began a career as a motorboat racing driver . In 1989 he lost an arm after a serious accident in the delta of the Río Paraná . Nevertheless, he was able to continue practicing his sport successfully with the help of a prosthesis and won eight world championship titles in offshore classes by his retirement in 1997 .

From 1997 to 2001 he was an MP for the Peronists in the Argentine Congress . Between 2003 and 2007 he was Vice-President of Argentina under Néstor Kirchner and qua President of the Senate . In 2007, Scioli was elected Governor of the Province of Buenos Aires with 48.24% of the valid votes . In 2011 he was re-elected, this time with 55% of the vote. Between June 2009 and March 2010, Scioli was chairman of the Peronist Party ( Partido Justicialista ) and held the office until May 2014, representing the late Néstor Kirchner.

Political position

Scioli is considered an independent " Kirchnerist " who does not agree to all of the guidelines decided by the leadership of the Frente para la Victoria ; During his tenure as governor, he made gestures that he was independent of the government under Cristina Fernández de Kirchner . In an interview with La Nación newspaper in 2011, he described himself as a “moderate middle-class Peronist”.

For the presidential election in Argentina on October 25, 2015, Scioli was considered a promising candidate for the Frente para la Victoria (FPV), Kirchner's left-centric electoral alliance “Front for Victory”. In the first ballot he got the most votes, but had to admit defeat in the subsequent necessary runoff election Mauricio Macri .

On December 10, 2015, he gave up his office as governor to his successor María Eugenia Vidal .
