La Nación ( Spanish for “The Nation”) is a daily newspaper published in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires .

It was founded on January 4th, 1870 by Bartolomé Miter and is one of the most important newspapers in Argentina.

The daily circulation averaged 159,832 copies in mid-2007 with a maximum of 255,220 on Sundays, making it the second most successful newspaper in the country after Clarín . The newspaper is the only one in Argentina to appear in broadsheet format .

In 1945 the previous La Nación Argentina was renamed La Nación . During the military dictatorship in Argentina (1976-1983) La Nación supported the government. Among other things, she is criticized for the hiding of torture and the disappearance of prisoners.

La Nación is generally considered a conservative newspaper. During Carlos Menem's presidency in the 1990s, she was pro-government, especially in the early stages. On the other hand, she is critical of the government of Néstor Kirchner and his successor Cristina Kirchner . She particularly criticized the partial nationalization of the pension system in 2008 after the collapse of private pension funds during the financial crisis.

La Nación is a member of the Inter-American Press Association SIP (Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa).
