The Maldivian Democratic Party ( Dhivehi ދިވެހިރައްޔިތުންގެ ޑިމޮކްރެޓިކް ޕާޓީ) is a liberal political party in the Maldives that campaigns for human rights and democracy on the archipelago. Because the Maldivian Democratic Party was not allowed to be registered, it initially worked from exile in Sri Lanka . On June 26, 2005, the MDP was finally approved. MDP candidate Mohamed Nasheed won the 2008 presidential election against former dictator Maumoon Abdul Gayoom . However, President Nasheed resigned after an attempted coup on February 7, 2012. The party is currently in opposition. Ibrahim Mohamed Solih , a member of the Maldivian Democratic Party, won the presidential election in September 2018.
