Ibrahim Mohamed (Ibu) Solih (born May 4, 1964 in Hinnavaru ) is a Maldivian politician of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). He has been President of his home country since November 17, 2018 .

Career

Solih was elected to the Maldives Parliament for the first time in December 1994 and has been a member of it ever since. He has played a leading role in the democracy movement in the Maldives since the early 1990s. In 2003 he was involved in the founding of the MDP, in 2004 in the drafting of the new constitution of his home country.

After ex-President Mohamed Nasheed, who lived in exile , decided not to run again, Solih was presented in June 2018 as a joint candidate for the MDP and other opposition parties for the presidential election in September 2018. He was joined by a member of the Jumhooree Party as a running mate .

On September 24, 2018, he managed a surprising victory in the presidential election against the previous incumbent Abdulla Yameen . Yameen admitted defeat and announced that he would accept the result. Solih took office on November 17, 2018.

Private

Solih was born on the island of Hinnavaru in Faadhippolhu Atoll as one of 13 siblings. His wife Fazna Ahmed, with whom he has two grown children, is a cousin of ex-President Nasheed.
