Life

Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom was born on May 21, 1959 in Malé, the capital of the Republic of Maldives. His father, Abdul Qayyoom Ibrahim, was the attorney general. His older half-brother (some sources speak of brother) is Maumoon Abdul Gayoom , who ruled the Maldives autocratically for three decades, from 1978 to 2008.

Yameen attended the Majeediyya School in Malé and studied at the American University of Beirut and the Claremont Graduate University . After a 2012 coup against the marine scientist and human rights activist Mohamed Nasheed , behind which Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was, and after months of unrest and three postponed elections, Yameen became president on September 7, 2013. He succeeded Mohammed Waheed Hassan in office. Yameen was also supported by wealthy resort owner and business tycoon Gasim Ibrahim (Villa Group). During the election campaign, Yameen promised a strong advocacy of law and order, the death penalty should be carried out in future, prison sentences extended and citizens being monitored across the board. Oil production should also be promoted and tourism expanded.

Yameen is married.

Explosion on the President's speedboat

On September 28, 2015, there was an explosion on the speedboat the President was on after returning from a Hajj in Saudi Arabia . The background initially remained unclear. Yameen was unharmed, only some of his companions, including his wife, were slightly injured. The FBI investigated the boat and found no evidence of a bomb explosion. On October 24, 2015, Vice President Ahmed Adeeb was arrested on suspicion of a murder conspiracy against Yameen for high treason. On November 4, 2015, Yameen declared a state of emergency over the Maldives for 30 days . The statement came two days before a planned demonstration by the leading opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). The official justification for the measure was the discovery of weapons and explosives near the presidential residence. After just under a week, the state of emergency was lifted again.
