Nasir was Prime Minister under Sultan Muhammad Fareed Didi from December 12, 1957 until his inauguration as the first President of the Second Republic.

Presidency

Nasir was introduced to the office of President of the Second Maldivian Republic on November 11, 1968. Above all, the modernization and opening up of the long isolated and almost unknown island state was ascribed to him. His main achievement was to have the Maldives admitted to the United Nations , also against the resistance of some other nations, who found it difficult to admit a small nation. He laid the foundations for the sources of income on which the Maldives depend: fishing and tourism .

It is also credited with other improvements, such as the introduction of an English-style curriculum in the country's public schools. He also brought television and radio into the country. Nasir abolished Vaaru , a tax on people living on islands outside of Malé, and built the Maldives' first international airport, Malé International Airport . Before stepping down, he submitted a motion to parliament that no one could be elected president for more than two terms. This request was rejected by Parliament.

Later life and death

Ibrahim Nasir was succeeded by Maumoon Abdul Gayoom , who had been Minister of Transport and permanent ambassador to the USA under Nasir , as president for thirty years (1978–2008). Nasir went to Singapore on December 7, 1978 when his mandate ended. In 1981 he was sentenced to absentee prison terms for corruption and planning a coup d'état , but was later pardoned.

Nasir died on November 22nd, 2008 at the Mount Elisabeth Hospital in Singapore at the age of 82. The cause of death is unknown. However, he had kidney problems that had been a burden for him even before he died. Nasir's body was taken to the Maldives, where it was laid out in Theemuge, the presidential palace in Malé on November 23. The day was declared a national memorial day in the Maldives and tens of thousands came to see Nasir's body, which was open to the public during a ceremony in Republic Square before it was moved to Theemuge. [4] In the presidential palace, Nasir paid their respects to current President Mohamed Nasheed and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, among others. His funeral prayers after the Fajr (sunrise) prayers on November 24th were performed by Dr. 'Abdul Majeed' Abdul-Bari directed. Thereafter, Nasir was buried at sunrise in the cemetery near the Friday Mosque (Hukuru Miskkiy). Nasir left three children, Ahmad Nasir, Ismail Nasir and Aishath Nasir. His other two sons died a few years before him.

criticism

Nasir has been criticized for his authoritarian methods and suppression of political activity during his tenure, particularly for cracking down on an uprising by the people of Thinadhoo, Addu and the Huvadu Atoll , who briefly formed a counter-government closely linked to the British.
