Mohammed Waheed Hassan ( Dhivehi ޑރ. މުހައްމަދު ވަހީދު ޙަސަން މަނިކު, * January 3, 1953 in Malé ) is a member of the political party Gaumee Itthihaad a Maldivian politician and was President of the Maldives from February 7, 2012 to November 17, 2013.

Life

Hassan studied at the American University of Beirut (AUB) and at Stanford University International Affairs and Business . He was Deputy Director of the UN Development Group Office (UNDGO) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York before returning to the Maldives in 2005. From 2008 to 2011, Hassan was Vice President under Mohamed Nasheed . Hassan has been President of the Maldives since February 7, 2012, succeeding Nasheed.

At the end of his term of office, the first round of the 2013 presidential election was declared invalid by the Supreme Court and the second round of voting was prevented by the police. The opposition candidate Mohamed Nasheed then called for his resignation. On September 7, 2013, new elections took place, which the challenger Abdulla Yameen won.
